WE SAID WE ARE GATHERING, WE GATHERED AND WE ARE READY TO SHIFT THE NARATIVE IN THE GOVERNANCE OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES

The African Youth Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Governance brought together young leaders, civil society representatives, government officials, and stakeholders to address important issues in Africa. The event, led by the Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND), focused on the importance of involving young people in environmental governance and sustainable development initiatives.

Here’s a rundown of the key points and agreements:

Youth Engagement: The conference stressed how crucial it is for young people to be involved in shaping the future of energy transition and environmental governance in Africa. Mr. Samuel Bekoe highlighted the role of young people as active agents of change, emphasizing that “Youth engagement is crucial in shaping the future of energy transition in Africa.”

Just Energy Transition: Speakers highlighted the concept of a fair energy transition, emphasizing the need for development strategies that are fair and inclusive. Mr. Bekoe emphasized the importance of policies that ensure clean energy benefits are accessible to everyone.

Renewable Energy Investments: There was a consensus on the need to prioritize investments in renewable energy infrastructure to make the most of Africa’s abundant renewable energy potential. This aligns with the call for collaboration between government, civil society, and youth organizations to implement inclusive energy transition policies.

Environmental Justice: The conference emphasized the importance of environmental justice and social inclusion in managing natural resources. Recommendations included enhancing transparency, accountability, and good governance practices to promote sustainable development.

Youth Participation: Mr. Chibeze Ezekiel highlighted the growing recognition of involving young people in natural resource management for sustainable development. He mentioned strategies to limit greenwashing and support youth engagement in green entrepreneurship.
